JA Means Success Needs Volunteers

Are you looking for an opportunity to develop or fine tune your presentation and public speaking skills?  SHRM-Atlanta has a great way for its members to grow and develop in these areas while giving back through our partnership with Junior Achievement!

The SHRM-Atlanta/Junior Achievement partnership is looking for volunteers to participate in JAMS (JA Means Success) program.  JAMS is a 9 week after school program for 6th – 9th grade students. Students work alongside volunteers to explore real world business challenges, develop analytical and problem solving skills, and learn about educational pathways available to youth. JA curriculum volunteers lead project based activities which address the workforce readiness needs of Georgia’s youth while showing students the benefits of completing high school and pursing a post secondary degree.

Junior Achievement provides all of the teaching materials as well as orientation for all volunteers.

Volunteers are needed at 3 schools, from 4 – 6pm, one day a week after school for 9 weeks (August 15th – October 14th). The schools are:

B.E.S.T. Academy
Coretta Scott King Leadership Academy

      SHRM-Atlanta: Creating Sponsorship Value

The Sponsorship Sales Team for SHRM-Atlanta is responsible for ensuring we have support from companies and organizations, both financially and operationally, to deliver the best workshops, conferences, training sessions and networking opportunities for HR professionals.  And we have been busy so far this year! We are grateful to the many friends of SHRM-Atlanta who have committed their support for 2011 and we are looking to them and to YOU to help us strengthen our offerings and building longer term, more partnership focused relationships.

What is a Partner? I’m very focused on partnership, it’s meaning and use in business vocabulary.  I’ve been known to say, maybe to a fault,  that we don’t get to declare ourselves partners, but that it is our customer that tells us that they consider us partners.    Whether it is as HR practitioners or sales people.  From a SHRM-Atlanta sponsorship standpoint, our goal should be to earn that title from our sponsors.   The value we bring to companies desiring to do business in the Human Resources field are looking to grow their business.  They are looking for ways to market their products and services to companies that will use their services.    Our goal is to understand how SHRM-Atlanta can help them do just that, really thinking about what is helpful, what is realistic and create sponsorship opportunities that will help them achieve their business goals.

What does SHRM-Atlanta have to offer?

      • The number #1 value we bring to sponsors is an opportunity to participate and make an impact in the Atlanta business community by developing professional and personal relationships with HR executives who buy their products or services.
      • We deliver well organized and effective Bi-monthly Chapter meetings and provide opportunities to share experiences with hundreds of HR professionals, and demonstrate their companies value and capability.
      • Annual Conferences/Expos offer excellent opportunity to create awareness for companies, especially those that may not be as well known.
      • Power Breakfasts and other special events create further opportunity to develop relationships with a senior level HR professional.

      .
Developing the relationship between SHRM-Atlanta and our Resource Partners is so critical to our success.  Year to year, meeting to meeting, relationship to relationship, Resource Partners bring tremendous value to SHRM-Atlanta and help us deliver on our goal of developing Human Resource Professionals.  Through learning sessions, product presentations, industry updates and well, yes…. Sponsorship!   Without their financial support, we are not able to provide the BEST IN CLASS meetings, conferences and networking opportunities SHRM-Atlanta is known for.

When businesses get involved in SHRM-Atlanta they do so for a variety of reasons…. community, giving back to the profession, supporting the development of future HR leaders, friendship….. and yes, to build their business!

So in 2011, we are making it our priority to reach out to companies and ask them:

      • “How can we serve you better?”
      • “What does a valuable relationship mean to you?”
      • “What type of events or opportunities to market would be most beneficial to drive your business?”

      .
You Can Help: If you are a practicing HR professional and have companies that provide products and services to you (and who doesn’t), you can very easily ask them if they sponsor SHRM-Atlanta:

      • If they do, THANK THEM!  And ask them how we can make that relationship more valuable.
      • If they don’t ask they why not?  Ask them to get involved, participate and support SHRM-Atlanta so you can continue to build your world class HR organization.

      .
Such a simple thing to do.  HR professionals owe it to themselves, their company and yes even to SHRM-Atlanta to help us make this an organization that is committed to Building a Better Atlanta for Business!   And a final word on partnership.  Believe me when I tell you, I don’t take the word lightly…..  but I look forward to the day when the companies that support SHRM-Atlanta stop me at a meeting or conference or call me on the phone and say:

“Wow, SHRM-Atlanta is so crucial to my business, I am very grateful for our PARTNERSHIP!”

So to all SHRM-Atlanta Sponsors (and soon to be sponsors), Thank You.   I am grateful for your support of SHRM-Atlanta and I personally value your commitment, enthusiasm and friendship.

Are There Gaps in Your Insurance Coverage?

PhotobucketBuying insurance is about sharing risk. For example, health insurance will cover some of the cost of getting and staying healthy. Homeowners insurance will assume the risk of loss in case your home is damaged or destroyed. But oftentimes, we think we’re covered for losses by insurance when, in fact, we’re not. Here are some common coverage
gaps to remember when reviewing your own insurance coverage.

      Life insurance
In general, when coupled with savings and income, you want to have enough insurance that will allow your family to continue to live the lifestyle to which they’re accustomed. But changing circumstances may leave a gap in your life insurance coverage.

For example, if you have life insurance through your employer, changing jobs could affect your insurance coverage. You may not have the same amount of insurance, or the policy provisions may differ. Your coverage may have decreased, or the type of insurance may have changed. Where your prior employer may have provided permanent life insurance, now you may have term insurance that will expire on a predetermined date. Review your income, savings, and expenses annually and compare them to your insurance coverage. Changing circumstances may require more insurance.

Your financial professional can help you determine if you have enough coverage to meet your family’s future income needs.

      Homeowners insurance

Homeowners insurance can be tricky as to what perils are covered and how much damage will be paid for. Clearly, it’s important to know what your homeowners policy covers and, more importantly, what it doesn’t cover.

You might think your insurer would pay the full cost to replace your home if it were destroyed by a covered occurrence. But many policies place a cap on replacement cost up to the face amount stated on the policy. You may want to check with a building contractor to get an idea of the replacement cost for your home, then compare it to your policy to be sure you have enough coverage.

Even if your policy states that “all perils” are covered, most policies carve out many exceptions or exclusions to this general provision. For example, damage caused by floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes may be covered only by special addendums to your policy, or in some cases, separate insurance altogether. Also, your insurer may not cover the extra cost of rebuilding attributable to more stringent building codes, or your policy may
limit how much and for how long it will pay for temporary housing while repairs are made.

To avoid these gaps in coverage, review your policy annually with your agent. A face-to-face meeting is always best with the policy right there in front of both of you. Also, take heed of notices you may receive. While it looks like boilerplate language, it could actually be changing your coverage significantly. Don’t rely on your interpretations–seek an explanation from your insurer or agent.

      Auto insurance
Which drivers and what vehicles are covered by your auto insurance? Most policies provide coverage for you and family members residing with you. So your child who is living in a college dorm is probably covered, but living in an off-campus apartment might exclude your child from coverage. If you and your spouse divorce, which policy insures your children who are living with each parent at different times during the year? Notify your insurer about any change in living arrangements to avoid a gap in coverage.

Other gaps include no coverage for damaged batteries, tires, and shocks. And you might not be covered for stolen or damaged cell phones or other electronic devices (e.g., MP3 players).

Your policy may also limit the amount paid for a rental while your vehicle is being repaired.

In fact, insurance coverage for rental cars also poses many gaps in coverage. For instance, your own collision coverage may apply to the rental car you’re driving, but it may not cover all of the damages alleged by the rental company, such as loss of use charges. If you’re leasing a car long-term, your policy may only cover the replacement cost if the car is a total loss or is stolen. But that amount may not cover the outstanding balance of your lease. Gap insurance can cover any difference between what your insurer pays and the balance of your lease.

Policy terms and conditions aren’t always well defined, and you may not understand what’s covered until it’s time to file a claim. So review your insurance coverages with your financial professional to be sure you’ve filled all the gaps in your coverage.

      Highlights of 2010

It has truly been my pleasure and a distinct honor to serve as your president for 2010.  This year has been filled with accomplishments for your SHRM-Atlanta chapter.  I’d like to take this opportunity to share just a few of the highlights with you.

Looking to our future, the SHRM-Atlanta Board of Directors and Executive Team engaged in a strategic planning process earlier this year.  The outcome was a new, bold vision for the chapter:  “SHRM-Atlanta – Working for a Better Atlanta.”  To begin the implementation of activities around this vision, we launched our first, very successful, Signature Luncheon event at our Fall Conference.  With support from our sponsors, we had excellent attendance of 115+ HR and business executives from the Atlanta community.  I encourage you to watch the video of the panel discussion to hear various perspectives on Atlanta’s economic opportunities and challenges.  The Board completed quite a bit of operational work as well, establishing many processes, policies and procedures for our chapter governance and operations. Now, each new leadership team has a strong foundation on which to build.

To continue growing our membership numbers, we undertook a new project to benchmark our membership numbers with comparable chapters and evaluate our strategies around membership growth.  When the analysis has been completed, a final report with recommendations will be made to establish new membership targets, plans, and timelines.  Concurrently this year, we strengthened the Ambassador program and conducted a Recruiter of the Year membership campaign which generated 25 new members.  We are the official sponsor of the DeVry SHRM Student Chapter and we became the new official sponsor of the Georgia State SHRM Student Chapter.

SHRM-Atlanta served the community in many ways this year.  We participated in a very successful Virtual Career Expo with 11 Alive WXIA TV station to provide job assistance to callers.  Over 100 SHRM-Atlanta volunteers participated in this two-night event, as well as many staff from the Department of Labor.  Together we helped 2,300+ job seekers who contacted us with questions.  We strengthened our relationship with the Atlanta Business Chronicle through a number of activities.  SHRM-Atlanta continues to be tapped to participate in articles, interviews and newsworthy activities by both ABC and AJC.

If you participated in our 20th Annual HR Conference, you saw that we partnered with Technology Association of Georgia (TAG).  TAG sponsored a Technology Row in our showcase and offered a track of programming.  Next year, this partnership will continue and TAG will provide content for a new HR and Technology Track in our conference.  SHRM-Atlanta co-hosted the PADV event “When Violence Goes to Work”.   And, we continue to support the Mayor’s Youth Program providing workforce readiness programs to City of Atlanta youth.

In 2010, we achieved the highest attendance ever for 20th Annual HR Conference.  Outstanding programming, extensive marketing efforts and new social media efforts all contributed to attendance.  We continue to evolve and improve the sponsorship offerings associated with the conference.

SHRM-Atlanta successfully launched the HR Leadership Academy in partnership with UGA Terry College of Business. 29 participants completed the program and received a UGA Advanced Certificate in Business Strategy, as well as a Certification from SHRM-Atlanta and 65 strategic CEU credits.  The program received extremely high ratings and several of the graduates have advanced to senior HR leadership roles.  To support our HR members in job transition, we conducted another HR Helping HR event which was very successful.  And, we added a 6-month extension to the existing 6-month free job transition membership.  We launched a new Perimeter GEM in 2010 with strong attendance and evaluations.

The SHRM-Atlanta chapter will be hosting SHRM’s 2012 Conference in Atlanta.  Preparations are already underway to recruit and organize over 1,000 volunteers to serve on several different teams helping out at the SHRM annual conference.  18,000+ attendees are expected to attend that conference and we will be working hard to showcase our city and chapter.  The opportunity to volunteer is now posted on the SHRM-Atlanta home page.

As I complete my year of service as your president, I want to take this opportunity once again to sincerely and wholeheartedly thank each and every one of you who contributed your time, energy, creativity and passion to SHRM-Atlanta this year. YOU are the reason we accomplished so much! Thank you for all you did to ensure the highest quality professional development and networking opportunities are right here in Atlanta.

Looking ahead to 2011, rest assured that there is a yet another great leadership team in place who will continue to take SHRM-Atlanta forward.  I encourage you to get/stay involved, give back, participate and attend.  It is tremendously rewarding and worthwhile.

Happy New Year to you and your families!
