LITTLER MENDELSON JOINS WITH PROMINENT GROUP OF ATTORNEYS TO FORM LITTLER, DE LA VEGA Y CONDE IN MEXICO
Firm Will Serve Increasing Latin American Interests of Multi-National Organizations;  Move is Latest in Littler’s Ongoing Effort to Enhance Global Service

MEXICO CITY, MONTERREY (December 15, 2011) – Littler Mendelson, P.C. (Littler), the largest employment and labor law firm representing management globally, has joined with a prominent group of Mexican attorneys to open two offices in Mexico establishing the leading labor and employment specialty firm in the country, Littler, De la Vega y Conde, S.C.  The firm’s Mexico offices, located in Mexico City and Monterrey, will be led by prominent Mexican attorney Oscar De la Vega and a local team of well-established labor and employment lawyers, including Enrique Garcia Conde, Monica Schiaffino, and Javiera Medina Reza, who will join as shareholders.  De la Vega will also serve alongside shareholder Juan Carlos Verela as co-chair of the firm’s Latin America Practice.

Littler’s move to the region will deepen its service to international clients with labor interests in the country, as well as Mexico-based organizations facing rapidly evolving employment issues abroad.  This latest endeavor also expands Littler’s expertise in Latin America following the opening of the firm’s first international office in Caracas, Venezuela in October 2010.

“Mexico is emerging as a region of sustained economic growth and opportunity.  In fact, according to the latest reports available, Mexico’s economy is on pace to grow by 5.5 percent this year following growth of 5.4 percent in 2010,” said Marko Mrkonich, president and managing director of Littler.  “We felt the time was right to expand our international capabilities in Latin America, particularly with such a stellar team of attorneys lead by Oscar. Their talent and proven reputation in the Mexican business community, supported by the Littler platform, we will enhance our footprint throughout the region enabling us to provide clients with extensive labor and employment resources to meet their increasing international needs.”

“Littler’s sole focus on labor and employment law provides a terrific opportunity to further expand our international employment law practice, while helping to facilitate the firm’s continued growth in the Latin American legal market,” said De la Vega.  “As natives to the country, we have deep ties to the business and legal communities and know the myriad of legal issues and challenges companies face in Mexico.  We look forward to collaborating with Littler’s vast network of highly regarded attorneys to serve our clients’ needs throughout Mexico and the broader Latin American region.”

De la Vega, a top-ranked lawyer in the Chambers Latin America 2011 guide, was previously with Basham, Ringe & Correa for more than 30 years.  His practice focuses in the area of labor and employment law, including advising multi-national corporations on matters related to Mexican labor law, immigration, social security issues and labor litigation.  In addition to De la Vega and the four shareholders from Basham, a total of 20 associates will be joining the two offices with experience ranging from labor management relations to employee benefits to immigration matters.

A Growing Latin American Presence

According to Peter Susser, a shareholder in Littler’s Washington, D.C. office and head of the firm’s International Employment and Labor Law practice group, “The expansion of Littler on the global stage is essential as more and more of our clients are confronting international labor and employment issues.  Oscar and his team are well positioned to serve the legal needs of companies doing business in Mexico and will be instrumental in helping Littler further enhance the scope of our services in the Latin American legal market.”

As Littler continues to expand the breadth and depth of its representation of management in international labor and employment matters, an increasing presence in Latin America will enhance the firm’s ability to serve the needs of clients doing business in the region.  With global businesses continuing to invest in the Latin American market, Littler is uniquely positioned to service clients on a global level through its international network of high-caliber attorneys with experience in cross-border labor and employment matters.  The firm has more than 150 Spanish-speaking attorneys across its 55 locations and advises clients on a wide-range of international employment matters.
